I read that Lyft donated a million dollars to ACLU, so that may be a good alternative.
(Also the fact that uber does surge pricing in the first place… evil and horrible. Plus the whole company’s model is to be dirt cheap juuust long enough to rub out the competition–taxi services–and then to jack the prices up to taxi prices. Until then, they’re bleeding money, just hoping to wait it out until people have no other alternative.)
“Asserting that California must lead the way on rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, lawmakers on Thursday announced a first-of-its-kind measure to streamline the process for changing gender on state identification and introduce an official “nonbinary” designation for those who do not identify as male or female.
Senate Bill 179, from Sen. Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, would allow Californians to update their gender on birth certificates, driver’s licenses and identity cards without undergoing clinical treatment or getting a court order. It would also make California the first state in the country to legally recognize nonbinary as a gender.”
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum wants to make sure that fascism doesn’t make a comeback.
A Twitter user snapped a shot of a poster from somewhere inside the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.
Judging by dollar sign symbol in the lower right hand corner, the sign looks to be a poster for sale.
The poster is derived from a 2003 article detailing the potential warning signs of an incoming fascist regime. Read more.
I would venture that Trump’s abuse of his political platform to discredit valid independent news outlets counts some way towards ‘control of the mass media’. He doesn’t have to gag anyone, he just has invalidate agencies with dissenting voices.
Also Trump understand better than most of his contemporaries what mass media actually IS these days. His use of Social Media doesn’t exactly resemble the things we think of re. dictators controlling TV stations etc. But media works differently now, and Trump is subverting these new rules too to his own end.
Can I just say like… I’m not American so I can’t really know what it’s like out there right now, but I am really proud of you guys. Like, Trump – a man known to have sexually assaulted multiple women – is elected, so the women of your country not only turn out in their millions but they inspire women around the world to do the same in solidarity. He preaches anti-intellectualism, so your scientists host database hacking and saving days to preserve data. He bans government agencies from speaking the truth, so they create rogue social media accounts that spread facts even at the risk of their jobs. He brings in racist immigration bans, causing chaos in airports and huge uncertainties in the lives of real, innocent people, so protesters swarm to the airports, lawyers work pro bono round the clock to get people into the country, and people mobilise to destroy him in the high court in a day.
I know this is awful and it sucks and it’s only been one freaking week, but you guys are doing amazing right now and I am so moved and so proud. It’s gonna be tough and everyone will have to pick their battles and just keep fighting and pushing, and this isn’t how it should be but at least we know there are people with the guts and the gumption to do what they can.
You guys are the sand in the gears.
The lawyers at JFK are saying their biggest need right now is translators. Please share this with your contacts: If you are an Arabic or Farsi speaker in NYC and are able to provide real-time translations please get in contact with the NY ACLU or the international refugee assistance project. Folks are still needed at terminal 4 at JFK. Share with your networks!
Believe me, nobody over here who isn’t in self imposed media exile has not seen that 😀
People might be amused/relieved to hear that
Jetta Klijnsma, the disabled politician featured here has reacted by saying, “Great. Simply fantastic.
Best video ever!”
The present U.S. administration wants you to be overwhelmed. They want you to burn out. They want to swamp you with bad news so that you don’t know where to turn or how to fight back, or whether you have the energy to be effective.
A suggestion: for every piece of bad news you reblog, reblog something about resistance. Reblog something about how people are building something, in direct contrast to those who are trying to tear us down. Reblog something that lifts your spirits and reminds you why we fight.
Do not do their work for them. Consciously choose to reblog light as well as the important news of what the administration is up to.
They do not get to make us despair.
yesterday and today were extremely hard for me with the deluge of constant terrible news, so i am trying very hard to remember that resistance is real, and it will continue to show up in unexpected but uplifting ways.
a list of some not-so-terrible things that happened today:
richard spencer got punched (again) // eta actually i’m unclear if this was the second time, both vid & pics look like they were taken at the inauguration. but now we have proof of both
feel free to add more. none of this is a reason to sit back and let other people take care of things for us, but remember a majority of the country hates this administration, and there’s power in numbers.
“Divergent political opinions” my arse. When the “divergent political opinion” is that someone should be locked up or killed purely for what they are, call it what it is. Dude was a Nazi, getting up in the face of a Jew. I appreciate the Guardian reporting it, but fuck off with this “divergent political opinion” bullshit.
Divergent political opinion is Scared Speak for “Must not offend the Nazis” because…fucking Reasons, I guess.
