The Dangerous Myth That Hillary Clinton Ignored the Working Class

In the days after her shocking loss, Democrats complained that Clinton had no jobs agenda. A widely shared essay in The Nation blamed Clinton’s “neoliberalism” for abandoning the voters who swung the election. “I come from the white working class,” Bernie Sanders said on CBS This Morning, “and I am deeply humiliated that the Democratic Party cannot talk to where I came from.”

But here is the troubling reality for civically minded liberals looking to justify their preferred strategies: Hillary Clinton talked about the working class, middle class jobs, and the dignity of work constantly. And she still lost.

She detailed plans to help coal miners and steel workers. She had decades of ideas to help parents, particularly working moms, and their children. She had plans to help young men who were getting out of prison and old men who were getting into new careers. She talked about the dignity of manufacturing jobs, the promise of clean-energy jobs, and the Obama administration’s record of creating private-sector jobs for a record-breaking number of consecutive months.

She said the word “job” more in the Democratic National Convention speech than Trump did in the RNC acceptance speech; she mentioned the word  “jobs” more during the first presidential debate than Trump did. She offered the most comprehensively progressive economic platform of any presidential candidate in history—one specifically tailored to an economy powered by an educated workforce.

What’s more, the evidence that Clinton lost because of the nation’s economic disenchantment is extremely mixed. Some economists found that Trump won in counties affected by trade with China. But among the 52 percent of voters who said economics was the most important issue in the election, Clinton beat Trump by double digits. In the vast majority of swing states, voters said they preferred Clinton on the economy. If the 2016 election had come down to economics exclusively, the working class—which, by any reasonable definition, includes the black, Hispanic, and Asian working classes, too—would have elected Hillary Clinton president.

The more frightening possibility for liberals is that Clinton didn’t lose because the white working class failed to hear her message, but precisely because they did hear it.

Trump’s white voters do support the mommy state, but only so long as it’s mothering them. Most of them don’t seem eager to change Medicare or Social Security, but they’re fine with repealing Obamacare and its more diverse pool of 20 million insured people. They’re happy for the government to pick winners and losers, so long as beleaguered coal and manufacturing companies are in the winner’s circle.

Massive deficit-financed spending on infrastructure? Under Obama, that was dangerous government overreach, but under Trump, it’s a jobs plan by a guy they know won’t let Muslims and Mexicans cut in line to get work renovating highways and airports.

#THANK YOU#it’s just a flat-out lie that she had nothing to say to the working class#you know why the working class didn’t hear it?#1. because a lot of them won’t listen to a thing she says because of years of media smears#2. because a number of them are super racist and only care about that#3. BECAUSE THE MEDIA DIDN’T REPORT ON HER ACTUAL POLICIES#emails emails emails benghazi emails#that was all they reported on#if they’d reported on her THOUSANDS OF PAGES OF INTRICATE POLICY#or even the highlights of her speeches then people would have heard all she had to say to working/middle class people#i am so disgusted by the false narratives constructed to ‘explain’ why white people didn’t vote for her#ugh#us politics tag (via queenofattolia)

Trump Is Literally Not My President: CIA States Russian Hacks Helped Trump Win

speciesofleastconcern:

sitta-pusilla:

The Washington Post broke this news yesterday. It has since been picked up by several other major media outlets.

If the CIA and this reporting is to be believed, the GOP-lead Senate deliberately ignored this information from the CIA to gain power. Someone needs to act BEFORE the Electoral College meets on Dec 19th.

So far Lindsay Graham is the only Republican to speak up in outrage. And the only Democrat to make waves has been Harry Reid (who is retiring). The GOP’s reaction is understandable. Trump’s reaction has been as scary as everything else he has done, but 100% understandable. But the Dems? Pure cowardice, as usual. Obama himself needs to do something about this, because any investigation will end on Jan 20th.

And YOU reading this need to make serious waves. Our highest Intelligence agency has claimed this election was stolen. Trump WILL get away with this if we don’t take to the streets, IMMEDIATELY. Call someone. Write something. None of this is politics as normal! People need to be jailed for this. This is the literal definition of influence from a foreign government, and exactly what the Electoral College was made to stop.

Benjamin Franklin helped to create Impeachment Clause of US Constitution. He realized that if a president were to “render himself obnoxious,” then people would logically consider assassination unless there was a legal way to get rid of the president.

Just obnoxious. Not treasonous or acting outside of the best interests of the American people. Just really really fucking annoying.

Ben Franklin understood people.

For the fifth time in our country’s history, and for the second time in the past 16 years, the winner of the popular vote lost the presidential election. It is time to abolish, or at least reform, the outdated electoral college, so that it will never again undermine the will of the American people.

You can sign this petition to abolish the electoral college via Constitutional Amendment: http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/abolish-the-electoral-6

However, enacting a Constitutional Amendment could be very difficult because it requires the approval of 2/3rds of Congress and ¾ths of the 50 state legislatures. Thankfully, there are other ways to enact a national popular vote, since the “winner-take-all” practice of awarding electoral votes is not actually in the Constitution. It can be changed state by state. Time to start the movement by contacting your legislators and making your voice on this issue heard. Visit www.nationalpopularvote.com to start learning about and acting on this important issue.

Guys, if you just put your email in it will automatically send emails to your state’s representatives, even draft up the email for you! (And there are different versions you can preview and send.)

Takes 15 seconds. Please spread like wildfire.

Short and sweet

Now is the time for CONCRETE ACTION, American followers. Not
reblogging, not sharing on facebook, but actual picking up a phone and doing a
thing.

Stephen Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist-elect, I suppose we’d
call him, is a white supremacist and an anti-Semite, anti-Muslim, jackass. This
appointment is dangerous to a lot of people you claim to care very much about.

Look up your Senator here: http://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/

House of Reps: http://www.house.gov/representatives/

And call them. Don’t email them, emails get ignored.

A sample script:

Hi, my name is ______________. As a constituent, I need my
Senator/Representative to know I oppose Bannon’s appointment, and I am
horrified such a man is even being considered. I hope that (legislator) does
not stand for open racism as an appropriate attitude in a chief strategist, and
that this doesn’t signal his/her approval of white supremacist ideology. I hope
(legislator) is planning to formally oppose the appointment.

I mean, jazz it up if you want—I know my audience and so
spoke about how Nazi ideology has no place in Montana, how we’re supposed to be
a land of hard work and fair play, not somewhere that supports blaming others
for our individual problems. I talked to my republican rep’s intern about how
this is why so many people have a bad idea about republicans, and it’s so
important to show we’re not like this, that Zinke truly believes in his
Christian ideals that all men are equal (I am not even slightly a republican or
Christian but also I have literally no issue lying about it to this dude). Know
your audience.

Everything I said about being ready still goes, but don’t
sit back and just let this happen, pick up the damn phone. If you want to send
me an ask about why you can’t do this—skip it, I’m not interested. You’re the
only one who has to live with you, you’re not answerable to me.

I have a lot of Asks to hit up (soon), and more than a few have wondered what they can do.

Here you go.

This is how to start, and a critical place to begin making your voice heard. Steve Bannon is no less than a terrifying appointment in such a critical position. He’s a blatant white supremacist and the embodiment of everything we have to fear resulting from this election. Call your representatives. KEEP CALLING THEM. Be respectful but firm, passionate but not rude. You want to be heard, not dismissed. Their jobs depend on their constituents, and the more voices they hear, the more attention they pay. Make them pay attention to you.

Things are dark but I believe we’ll get through it. It won’t happen just by hoping really hard though. It’s going to take vigilance and action. Let’s get on it.

Pick up the phone and do your part.

Seriously guys, forget the safety pins, forget just RTing links and shaking our heads, this is what WE CAN DO to really help.
A trickle of congressmen and senators are starting to publicly denounce T’s cabinet choices and it’s because actual real people are CALLING them and filling their message banks and calling again to BE HEARD. Their job is to represent YOU if they want to KEEP that job.
I called my congressman’s office. It was a bit scary, yeah, I’d never done this before either. But it was quick and I just kept thinking whomever picks up the phone, it’s THEIR JOB to hear you. Your voice COUNTS.
It can be as simple as ‘Hi, I’m a constituent calling because I wish *insert name here* to oppose the President-Elect’s choice of Bannon for Chief Strategist. Bigotry, sexism and racism have no place in our government. Thank you’.

You can do this! It’s easy. Staffers are used to hearing from constituents, they will probably just say “mm-hmm” until you’re done, and then ask for some info from you (maybe name, phone number, etc).

I called all three of my representatives today. One’s a democrat and had already denounced Bannon (ilu Sherrod Brown) but they can use the support, too. My Republican congressman’s office listened to me, thanked me for calling, took my info. My Republican Senator’s office was a little more dismissive, but I made the call. Being a Senator he has multiple offices. I will call again to the other offices.

Just over the course of today, the coverage and reaction to Bannon has gotten considerably harsher. It makes a difference.
