i can’t wait to see this shithole of a nation burn to the ground!

“A coroner in western Illinois is facing sharp criticism for how he handles poor people who can’t afford to bury their loved ones: He has them sign over their rights to the deceased, leaving them without the death certificate, then cremates the body and keeps the ashes until the family pays $1,000.If they cannot come up with the money, the ashes are eventually buried, along with others, in an unmarked grave. If the family needs the death certificate to access bank accounts or life insurance, the coroner first arranges for the county to recoup its costs from any proceeds.“

It somehow manages to be even worse than you’d think.

setup and
punchline

The artist is luo li rong

The statue doesn’t have big enough titties to have been made by a man.

I know I’ve reblogged this before but the schadenfreude is too delicious.

By the way, the statue is called

La mélodie oubliée (The Forgotten Melody). Luo Li Rong also painted it:

And here she and the statue are in a more formal setting (museum or art show, I can’t tell):

whats the point of fantasy novels if youre still going to treat women like shit

actually the point of it is to show that women were treated like more shit back then and since most fantasy novels take place in medevil/premedevil times, women were literally seen as breeders and only knew to please their husbands and raise their children and sew so women are treated actually very well considering what it used to be.
don’t post stuff like that pls thanks bye

“Hi I’m basement bob and I think potatoes and dragons should be allowed in fantasy novels despite being entirely historically inaccurate but extreme sexism which literally hurts real live woman on a daily basis is super cool and has to be included. Can’t be historically inaccurate lol.”

Fantasy novels are not remotely “Accurate” to any period of human history ever recorded and anyone who seriously thinks that stuff like Game of Thrones is “Historically accurate” in any way shape or form I’m going to go ahead and assume flunked history class

“Most fantasy novels take place in medieval/pre-medieval times”. They dont. Theyre fantasy. They take place in their own world and their own technology. They often have similarities to those times but are fundamentally their own thing and history doesnt apply to them

Apparently adding dragons and ogres and sorcery is fine but taking away misogyny is going too far

‘dont post stuff like that’

Also, medieval women raised crops, wrote books, made music, made clothes from scratch, tended animals, brewed beer, baked bread, balanced the books, and yes, even commanded soldiers in a pinch. Even noblewomen! A castle involved a lot of administrative work, and guess whose job that was? (Hint: not Mr. ‘Going on a Crusade, back never probably’)

So much pseudo-medieval fantasy isn’t content with merely the misogyny of the period they claim to emulate, they have to add extra misogyny so that, presumably, the wimminz feel properly grateful rather than kind of wishing we could be an abbess.

Look, medieval times and ancient times in general aren’t gender egalitarian utopias, but a lot of the sexism and misogyny we are familiar with today in society, are recent additions, or resulting from recent additions.

i.e. Yeah, women didn’t have the right to vote until like a century ago – but go back another century or two, and most people in general didn’t have the right to vote, either. Women have historically been sidelined out of “professional” leadership and politics – but up until the last few centuries, most societies had other areas in life, other strata of leadership, that women were either a part of or even dominated. (i.e. We regard religion as a relatively private or local matter today, but in many ancient Roman or Hellenic socieities, temple and religious matters were part of public life, and guess who usually headed those spheres?)

The reason why most fantasy has to add sexism or misogyny is to justify why a male character who doesn’t address sexism or misogyny that exists is still a “progressive” character. A male character who accepts a female leader as long as he can sexualize her is progressive compared to one who wouldn’t accept her at all – but compared to a society of men who are okay or even accustomed to take leadership and orders from women, he looks like an ass.

I can’t get over this shit.

actually the point of it is to show that women were treated like more
shit back then […] so women
(now) are treated actually very well considering what it used to be.

That’s some tacit acknowledgement that women are treated like shit and that you gotta reach into fantasy to show them that it could be worse..

However, this isn’t sitting well with people who actually read medieval Latin. Medieval Academy of America director Lisa Fagin Davis told The Atlantic’s Sarah Zhang, “They’re not grammatically correct. It doesn’t result in Latin that makes sense.” She added, “Frankly I’m a little surprised the TLS published it…If they had simply sent to it to the Beinecke Library, they would have rebutted it in a heartbeat.” The Beinecke Library at Yale is where the Voynich Manuscript is currently kept. Davis noted that a big part of Gibbs’ claim rests on the idea that the Voynich Manuscript once had an index that would provide a key to the abbreviations. Unfortunately, he has no evidence for such an index, other than the fact that the book does have a few missing pages.

The idea that the book is a medical treatise on women’s health, however, might turn out to be correct. But that wasn’t Gibbs’ discovery. Many scholars and amateur sleuths had already reached that conclusion, using the same evidence that Gibbs did. Essentially, Gibbs rolled together a bunch of already-existing scholarship and did a highly speculative translation, without even consulting the librarians at the institute where the book resides.

THANK YOU.  The fragment of his “transcription” that was included in with the original essay was ridiculous. Among other things, his system of decoding had  this writer who, per his own theory, wrote exclusively in scribal abbreviations, not just spelling out et in full every time it appeared but writing it as e t .

Also, his writing was insufferably bad, his tone insufferably pretentious, and the author had plainly never bothered to learn anything about the encyclopedic traditions and history of book-production that he laboriously mansplained.

Fuck mansplaining in academia in particular.

daisura:

worth noting:

– It was a pack of 15 people driving cars/trucks decked out in confederate flags, banners, and US flags. All 15 are being brought to justice, and this is just the latest news on the whole debaucle.
– They did this in a predominately black neighborhood.
– The caravan passed a public park, and these two schmucks decided to take a detour over to a group of black people
– These people were a family having a birthday party for their kids
– The witness concensus of what they did when harassing the party was “yelling racial slurs and displaying a crowbar, a knife and either a rifle or a shotgun".
Threatening the lives of children likely earned some brownie points with the judge and lengthened their sentences.
– Georgia has some strict laws regarding gang activity, which applied to a large group of armed individuals actively setting out to harass a community with very openly racist motivation.
– On top of the sentence, these two are also banished from the county this incident occurred in. This means they’ll also have to sell or give up property they own.
– I’m seeing a lot of people try to argue this is unjust because they have the right to ‘freedom of speech’, but I hope that’s just because these people defending it haven’t read any of the details. This is not freedom of speech, it is domestic terrorism, and was labeled as such by the police.

Reminder that if you have a problem with queer interpretations of Captain America, that problem is NOT shared by the cast or creators, so stop projecting.

I’ve had plenty of people tell me that it’s “disrespectful” to the authors if you interpret a character as queer without a clear textual indication. But the people who actually made these characters disagree with that.

MCU Cast & Crew:

  • The Russos are cool with it and have repeatedly validated the interpretation, even noting that a lot of women who worked on the movie are invested in that relationship. (Link 1, 2, 3, 4).
  • Sebastian Stan is fine with it, and thinks it’s great that people can interpret it however they want. (Link).
  • Chris Evans says he didn’t deliberately put it into his performance, but he has no problem with it and thinks a romantic relationship “wouldn’t be so bad.” (Link).
  • Emily VanCamp was excited to hear about it, and thinks it’s great that this is a conversation we’re having about a character like Captain America. (Link).
  • Hayley Atwell is a fan of bisexual Steve Rogers, and hates pretty much every ship for Steve but Steve and Bucky. (Link 1, 2).

Comics:

  • Ed Brubaker, the man who created the Winter Soldier, not only fucking loves it, but has also been known to tweet links to Steve/Bucky fan fiction. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

If you have a problem with interpreting this character as anything other than heterosexual, not only is that problem yours alone, but the character’s creator thinks you’re stupid. Stop hiding behind authorial intent, and consider why it bothers you so much that someone you thought was straight might not be.

Also, Hayley ships Cartinelli. ❤

Samuel L Jackson literally called Chris “LGBT Captain America” on a red carpet–in front of Chris, Scarlett, and a ton of press. Chris responded with a happy laugh.

For the fucking record, there’s no mention of Captain America’s creators in the above posts. Jack Kirby and Joe Simon created Captain America. SO, you’d better correct your statements as it applies to Disney’s Marvel only.

The fact that there’s no real evidence to support Captain is homosexual tells me he isn’t. Fan interpretations are just fans individualising and tailoring things they like to be more fitting for their lifestyle.

That is all.

Oh, and fuck Disney’s Marvel.

I find that it’s often somewhat difficult to ask dead people for their opinions on a topic. But I pulled out my ouija board just for you, and they told me they’re both cool with it.

They also wanted me to pass on, “F U C K Y O U”

Maybe that’s some sort of pet name you guys had for each other?
