This 11-year-old Texas boy invented a device to prevent hot car deaths

Bishop Curry looks for ways to fix the world.

For an 11-year-old boy, he’s unusually curious
about big-picture problems, his dad says — from natural disasters to
civil rights. And he’s always loved to tinker.

That’s why it wasn’t a surprise when Bishop,
after seeing an upsetting local news report about a 6-month-old who died
when left in a hot car, resolved to make sure something like that never
happened again.

… So Bishop, in his McKinney, Texas home, drew a mock-up of a device
that would sense if a child is left alone in a car. The device, attached
to a headrest or car seat, would then alert parents’ phones and the
police — all while blowing cold air until help arrives.  He calls the device “Oasis.“ 

"It’s like texting,” Bishop said. “But without emojis." 

His dad, an engineer at Toyota also named
Bishop Curry, was immediately sold on the idea: "My thought was, ‘Why
isn’t this in stores now?’" 

Toyota was so impressed by Bishop’s idea that it sent him and his dad to Michigan for a safety conference.

Bishop Curry V may be young (10 years old, to be precise), but the little kid from Texas has some big ideas. He’s currently working on a device that could help prevent children from dying in hot cars.

The number of children who died in hot cars increased across the country last year, and Texas had the highest number of cases. Sadly for Bishop, the issue also hits close to home because a baby died in a minivan last summer outside a home near his own family’s home in McKinney.

Bishop was inspired to create a device he calls “Oasis,” which would attach to a car seat and detect if a child is left inside the vehicle, prompting it to blow cool air until parents or the police are notified.

“It would be a dream to have lots of inventions that would save many lives,” the precocious 10-year-old told the news station.

A lot of people don’t realize how easy it is to leave something in a hot car.

It’s easy to forget something when it’s not in your daily routine, especially if it’s asleep or under a blanket or something.

This is a nightmare. I don’t have kids myself, but I can absolutely understand how this could happen- everyone’s sick so you’re probably kind of out of it, you run in thinking you’re just going to be a minute, get distracted with the task at hand… and then your child dies in a horrific way because of it…

I’m all for any methods or technologies that can help prevent it from turning tragic.

A Nigerian student has achieved the highest grades at a Japanese university for the past 50 years, while solving a mathematical equation which was unsolvable 30 years ago, in his first semester.

Ufot Ekong achieved a first in electrical engineering at Tokai University in Tokyo, scoring the best marks since 1965, CCTV Africa reported.

Ekong, from Lagos, also plays the saxophone, and runs a retail wears and accessories shop in Japan called Strictly African Japan.

The Nigerian speaks English, French, Japanese and Yoruba, his country’s native language, and paid his way through university himself.

He currently works for Nissan and has already patented two products, as well as making an electric car which reaches up to 128 kmph.

During his time at university, Ekong has won six awards for academic excellence.

I met my favorite person this weekend.

I have these Native American reenactments in the summer, okay. We dress in authentic Native garb and go teach about our culture and whatnot at historical events. There’s this one on a weekend that housed all reenactors from Ancient Greece to World War II–you can walk through a timeline of living history. It’s cool.

So there are these guys in a tent on the far hill called the Scottish Highlanders. They bring about two to five people to their thing per year. They do all the good medieval Scottish jazz. Kilts, weapons, challenging you to fights.

But theres this one guy that is there every time. I always go visit to hear him give in depth talks about Scottish Reavers and their malitia and weaponry and stuff. He’s fun, so I go talk to him and he’s asking about what school I’m going to, what I want to do, etc.

So I tell him I want to be a history teacher and I like to write. He asks me if I have anything published, and I say no, thinking he means an actual book. But he waves me off and asks, “No, online. Have you ever heard of Fanfiction.net?”

Let me explain a thing. This guy. Is well over six feet. His biceps are bigger than my head, he’s about 45 years old, he has the thickest Scottish accent you’ve ever witnessed, he can wave two axes around like nobody’s business, he usually resolves friendly arguments with full on battle in armor with real weaponry with the scars to prove it, and he kind of has a biker gang.

And this guy starts telling me about the 700 page Doctor Who fanfiction that he’s been writing for six years and still running. 

Shamelessly continues to explain how he gets together with his badass biker buddies and they ride to his house with bottles of Jack Daniels and talk about the next fanfiction that they’re going to write together. (More Doctor Who, Xena Warrior Princess, Agents of Shield, Lord of the Rings…) They dare each other to write crossovers for interesting character interaction. This guy raves with excitement over character development and analysis. 

I cried.

I LOVE THIS. The perils of a site like Tumblr which is dominated by people under 30 (not on my dash, though, but that’s what demographics insist is true) is they genuinely don’t think anyone older has any interests in common with them. I feel like Livejournal was more varied in this regard, though again, my flist on LJ had all ages on it, so maybe it was just me. The only over 40s they know are the adults in positions of authority like parents and teachers, and surely Mom and Mr. W the Chem teacher have never heard of fan fiction or have the least interest in anything on the interwebs. A kid at work (I work at a university) who I jokingly called a meme lord once told me I needed to stop learning such things from my kid – who is 11 and basically uses the internet to watch Minecraft videos on YouTube, but of course she must be the one teaching me all these modernfangled intertoob things!

I admit though that I have fallen into the stereotype that fandom is all women, because that’s been my experience by far; I think the number of male-identified people I’ve come across in my various fandoms wouldn’t pass the single digits. But that’s probably due to the nature of my reading and the way I curate my dash. Where’s a big ol’ 40 something biker dude who writes Stucky?? Point him out to me and I’ll add him to my dash!

Let’s agree this year has been a total mess full of tragic events that got us all thinking “Can we have a damn break?”. Sadly all the bad stuff tends to bring us all so down that we forget about the good stuff. However, I want to remind you all of the incredible things that happened this year.

Diversity was the night’s winner at SAG Awards in pointed counter to Oscars.

The US Justice Department sued Ferguson to force the city to adopt police reforms negotiated with the federal government.

Beyoncé told us to get in Formation.

“Formation” is more than just a music video, it’s a siren call, a hymn that addresses discrimination and racism. 

Jay Z’s Tidal donated $1.5 million to Black Lives Matter and other non-profit organizations.

The funds were raised during the October 2015 Tidal X concert at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. Performers included Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj and Usher.

Beyoncé killed it at the Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show…

…and then blessed us with Lemonade…
