@thebibliosphere look what I found? I saw it and thought of you.

in a good way, i promise!!!

I love the caption that says “they’re baaaack” both implying there is more to this, and the author is a 1980s equivalent of s shit poster.

I have. THREE. Of these books. They are a collection of short stories featuring the ridiculous fantasy tropes of women warriors. It’s a group of lady writers taking the piss out of lazy male fantasy writers and they’re FANTASTIC. If you ignore the shitpost covers.

TO AMAZON USED MARKETPLACE

I was gonna add that these books were fucking great.

READ THESE.  They are so funny and clever and they take a literary morningstar to the patriarchy.

There are six books in this series. Five of them came out between 1995 and 2004; Book Six came out in 2015 after an 11-year hiatus, so here’s hoping for more. They are, in order:

  • Chicks in Chainmail
  • Did You Say Chicks?!
  • Chicks ‘N Chained Males
  • The Chick is in the Mail
  • Turn the Other Chick
  • Chicks Ahoy! (trade omnibus of the first three books, no new stories)
  • Chicks and Balances

One of the things I love best about the series is that the various authors will often write short stories for them about the same set of characters: there are several stories about the Ladies’ Aid & Armor Society, a support group/workers union for women in the army; merc-for-hire Hallah Iron-Thighs and her partner in violence Gerta Dershnitzel; single mother/also merc-for hire Rivakonniva; etc.

So yes, go out and buy them, they are so fun.

Also edited by the same person, but not in the same series:

Bonus note: I met Esther Friesner a couple of times and she’s exactly what you’d expect from the editor of these. Lovely lady, 100% tumblr-before-tumblr-was-tumblr.

reblogging for the fangs for the mammaries.  i must go find this book.

Oh my god this post got so much better.

YES, HAVE SOME!

ahahaha. I have five of them–i’m missing chicks and balances. I should fix that.

My wife told me to find a bit of a story she vaguely remembered me reading bits of to her, but I told her that would be…kinda a long journey since it could be in any of the five books I have.

HOWEVER! In the first book, there is a story called “Exchange Program” and it stars Hillary Rodham Clinton organizing the Valkyries in Valhalla and getting them better treatment from the Norse pantheon. It’s….wonderful. All of these books are wonderful.

I am going to have to find the Fangs for the Mammories. I did not know about it, and I need it.

The specific passage I asked her to find described a warrior lady in great detail, going into depth about how no part of her could reasonably by described as “pert”.

It concluded by describing some orcs. And that they could be called “pert” if you really wanted to.

Shout out to the Wonder Woman movie for having multiple Asian Amazons.

We have Mayling Ng, a Chinese-Singaporean actress, playing Orana.

Samantha Jo, a Chinese-Canadian actress, playing Euboea.

Eleanor Matsuura, a Japanese-English actress playing Epione.

Asian women are represented among the Amazons and that’s awesome.

I’m sorry but don’t you realize that the Amazons were Greek?

“The Amazons of Themyscira are a race of immortal warrior women that live on the mystically hidden island of Themyscira. They were created by a coterie of Olympian gods over three thousand years ago to serve as their messengers to the world in the name of peace and justice.” (x)

They’re a mythical people created from gods. Here’s a picture of them from the comics:

The Amazons have never all been white, Greek women, and they sure as hell shouldn’t be portrayed that way in a film that is supposed to empower ALL women of ALL races. Asian women should not be excluded.

Please don’t try to bring in the “historical accuracy” argument for why the Amazons should all be white because they are literally a race of women who have super strength and magical lassos and are created from clay, and you have a hard time accepting some of them as Asian?

I am for real so hyped about this

The DAPL news is definitely something to be proud of but don’t think that the work is done. Jan Hasselman, who serves as an attorney for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, said that the Energy Transfer Partners can still sue this decision, and Trump can try to overturn it. This is a lengthy process that will takes years (with a better explanation why below) and we need to watch it as decisions are made. Remember the pipeline is still being built and it’s going somewhere.

[Text reads: I do admin law for a living so let me explain how this corps decision plays out. The refusal to grant the easement stop the pipelines… for now. Trump could easily reverse it. But, the decision to order an EIS delays the pipeline for at least several years. If Trump orders the corps to stop the EIS process, several groups will sue, arguing that the reversal is arbitrary and capricious. And they will likely win, which means the EIS will be completed. That takes 2+ years. If the EIS ultimately recommends the same of similar route, several groups will sue, delaying it for 2+ more years. 1 year for suit in federal court, and 2 more year for appeal. Bottom line: decision to order an EIS that Trump probably cannot force a pipeline through same/similar route for 4+ years.]

We also have to remember that many water protectors are still going to be needing help with medical and legal funds so keep an eye out how to still help.

Chelsea Manning has only 10 days to secure 62k more signatures on her petition for the commutation of her sentence and release. please take a moment to sign. you do NOT have to be american to sign the petition.

like not to be negative but yr not gonna get someone’s sentence overturned or commuted with a whitehouse.org petition

Chelsea Manning’s legal team filed for a formal commutation of her sentence on November 14th. you can read the full application here. while the petition is not the sole basis for her release, it is being used to expedite the process of assessing her eligibility for commutation while obama is still in office and the acting president.

comments like this are not only a little irritating but they’re also just totally misinformed. like political prisoners rely on petitions a lot to gain local, national and eventually international support and have been effective in the past in expediting their release process. this defeatist “nothing will ever change oh well” attitude is such a waste of time and kind of pretentious. like i can understand the cynicism and pessimism–but it would be worthwhile to recognize that there is no better time than right now to campaign for her release. this is the most optimal time period to apply pressure to the obama admin to commute her sentence. sign the petition.

s4karuna:

Some of the actresses of Romani descent suggested for Wanda Maximoff, who is canonically half Romani in the comics, following the MCU’s whitewashed portrayal of her.

Romani representation is vitally important

and Marvel has a responsibility to represent Scarlet Witch, whose heritage is an integral part of her character, respectfully and accurately.

Wanda deserved better.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38203131 just because I don’t trust the Daily Mail.

Also, I recommend that in addition to keeping up the donations, after this is done continue to donate to Native American charities and foundations. The reason they had to protest for so long was because of a lack of respect/political power.

Please stop linking to the Daily Mail, it is a hateful rag and gets ad revenue every time someone lands on their site!
