Red and blue are why QA teams were invented
for fuck’s sake they weren’t badly programmed. They were bleeding edge. It’s so easy to forget that but Red and Blue were literally pushing the limits of what they could fit on the cartridge.
They used every trick in the book. In that way, the programming behind them is GENIUS. It’s frankly a lost art, in this era where hardware is insanely cheap and scalable, when you can just keep throwing more resources at the problem. But Red & Blue were when programmers had to get creative. Not currently using a piece of memory? Repurpose it, we can’t just leave it lying around. Only have a couple registers? Juggle them, keep careful track so we can restore them when we needed. Does this data need to be single purpose, or can we also use it for, say, a seed value?
And all this WORKED. I guarantee you 99% of children playing this never saw a bug in casual play. MODERN games are buggier by a landslide. Remember when X&Y came out and there was an ENTIRE CITY you couldn’t save in because it’d DELETE YOUR SAVE? Imagine that happening in the days of Red&Blue. It couldn’t have. I can turn on my red cartridge TODAY and have it work. And the bugs that did exist, those edge cases they missed? They produce this behavior because the game REFUSES TO CRASH. Sure, you can make it crash if you try hard enough, but goddamn it’s resilient. It just plugs away with garbage data in memory for as long as possible.
Y’all looking down from your 64-bit quad-core smartphones with 128GB SD cards like Red & Blue were programmed by amateurs. What, you also going to bitch that the Wright Brothers didn’t make a jet engine? These are artifacts from pioneers who wrote the goddamn book that others would use as gospel.
Everytime I see someone’s edgy theory about how capturing Pokémon is wrong, I remember that time in Sinnoh it was explicitly stated that Pokémon approach trainers specifically to engage in battle and how it’s implied multiple times throughout the series that Pokémon engage in battle and competitions for their own prestige and it’s just a symbiotic relationship that a respectful trainer gets a career for helping raise a powerful Pokémon while the Pokémon gets access to stronger opponents and more varied experiences than it ever would in its native habitat
Also in the first episode of the anime Ash asks why a wild pokemon is attacking Pikachu and his pokedex says that wild pokemon are often jealous of pokemon with trainers.

Pokemon are miniature blood knights who love beating the shit out of one another and dream of joining professional fighting squads that go around beating the shit out of one another and I think that’s amazing
It’s actually also officially stated that pokemon battle all the time against each other in the nature. Just think about it: it’s how they EVOLVE, that’s how they grow and mature, and you meet evolved and high-leveled pokemon in the wilds, meaning they did a lot of fighting. Also, a lot of people forget that the reason they have moves is because it’s how they harness their power in a relatively safe way. That’s why they need to learn things like “Cut”, “Surf” and “Fly”: they could do all those things naturally, but they need to learn how to cut things without gutting creatures around them, how to swim without drowning you in the process, how to fly without having you falling from dangerously high heights. They use moves precisley because that isn’t a brutal beat-down or a fight to the death, but a safe way of confrontation and personal growth. And it was also stated that captured pokemon are stronger and level up faster than wild ones, meaning that once they bond with a trainer the whole challenging other trainers is actually beneficial to them, not cruel.

Throughout the years I’ve seen so many headcanons for the eeveelutions, many of which based the Eevees off of just one animal or a mix of them so I decided to play around with some designs to encompass most of these ideas.
The main idea being that: Because Eevee’s DNA is so wacky and it can evolve into so many diverse evolutions, its species can also vary from evolution to evolution, region to region, bloodline to bloodline.
Many being domestically bred for specific traits whether it be for battling, contests, companionship, or to be put to work, many others are found that way in wild populations where little human interaction has occurred.
All of the standard Eeveelutions shown are supposed to be more or less ambiguous, not based around just one animal but instead, designed to fit their official artwork as close as possible. Basically, standards are mutts as far as what species they are is concerned, hence people calling them catfoxrabbit things. As for the variations, all bets are off and many have been bred and narrowed down to one species.
The three-to-four variation examples I drew at the top of each picture are not exclusive to which species expresses it in the examples below. These variation types whether it be coat pattern, jewels, leaves, skin type, can appear in most any strain of each respective eeveelution.
Likewise, the species variations beside the standard eeveelution are not the only available species per that pokemon as the possibilities of other species and mixes are endless. It’s even possible for your eevee to change species upon evolution, much like the quilava line already does [shrew to weasel to badger].
It took me about three days to finish this and loads of references. In the end I’m quite happy with how it all came out and I hope you all enjoy. And if you want to draw character inspiration from this post please be my guest!!
