Hey mom, so I’m flying to see my girlfriend this summer and I’m uh kinda a nervous flyer. Always gives me a headache and makes me feel sick and anxious. Any tips on how to make it better?

Unfortunately no. I’m also an awful flyer and get severe migraines from it, and I’ve never been able to overcome it 😦

I just wind up standing in passport control on the other side, swaying and feeling like I’m about to have a full on aura migraine/collapse.

Maybe someone else will have some handy advice though?

Sorry if this is obvious stuff, but I fly fairly frequently and have had some bad flights- I spent the last one with my head pressed against the seat in front of me and my hoodie up the entire time, lol- here is my accumulated experience, maybe some of it will be helpful:

-don’t rush on or off the plane. There’s only one or two exits, a certain number of seats, and everyone has to wait their turn, you might as well stay comfortably seated at the gate or in your seat until the line has moved.

-make sure you have water with you, and that you’re properly hydrated before the flight. Small sips can help if you feel sick or your head hurts.

-getting a good night’s sleep is also very helpful

-try not to fly hungry.

-uh, gross but true- try to give yourself time before the journey to do all your bathroom business in peace. Rushing out of the house in the morning without going number two does not help because your bowels are gonna wake up at 35,000 feet while the seatbelt light is still on.

-sucking hard on a sweet or chewing some gum can really help relieve the pain from the altitude change, and on take-off and landing. You can even just suck on your teeth, honestly.

-disposable tissues are your friend. You can blow your nose, spit into them if you have a nasty taste in your mouth, wipe your brow. Cloth tissues are ok too, actually, you just have to keep them afterwards 😛

-take a small soft pillow on the flight, or something to make it possible to rest your head comfortably. It may not seem like much but it can make a huge difference.

-comfy clothes. Don’t worry about flying dress code, that doesn’t exist anymore. If the flight is longer than a couple of hours you should wear stuff that won’t poke or scratch or restrict your breathing.

-if you like listening to audiobooks or music and it doesn’t make your headaches worse, prep something soothing and comfortable for the flight, to drown out the engine hum. Sometimes I just put on an audiobook and drift off without even listening to the words.

-always ask the flight crew for help if you need it. You can tell them as you get on the plane that you’re not feeling well and would appreciate a glass of water as soon as they can, for example, or a sick bag just in case. If you’re polite, they are usually very accommodating. I mean they should be either way but being polite makes their jobs easier.

-do not feel bad about feeling sick or being anxious. This happens to people all the time on planes. If you need to go to the bathroom and stay there for twenty minutes, that’s ok. If you need to ask the person next to you to move so you can leave your seat, that’s ok. If you don’t want to talk to them, that’s ok- you have nothing to apologise for and have no obligations to be sociable.

I just want to add that a pair of noise cancelling headphones can help a LOT. I have a cheap-ass pair and even they changed things from ‘I feel like my ears are bleeding’ to ‘I actually snoozed a bit’.

How to Make Quick and Easy Tattoo Sleeves

Got a cosplay idea but the character has lots of arm (or leg) tattoos? Don’t feel like painting on yourself with body paints or hunting down that horrendously expensive temporary tattoo paper? Here’s a quick tutorial for making tattoo sleeves using nylons and sharpie markers!

Upsides:

– Supplies are cheap! You may even have many or all the supplies you need right at home.

– Quick and not very messy! No paint is involved, and sharpie marker dries instantly.

– Easy! Great artistic skill not required.

– They move with your skin! People have legit thought these were real tattoos. From a distance, yes, but I had guys at cons with actual ink on their arms come over to compliment on my full (fake) sleeves.

– You get to eat pringles! More on that later.

Downsides:

– They are delicate. Nylons get holes in them super easy and forearms run into stuff, lean against things, and generally make it hard for the sleeves to survive. But if you only need them for a weekend, that’s ok.

– I haven’t experimented too much, but unfortunately this technique probably doesn’t work for wearers with darker skin tones. Sharpie ink is transparent, so any color it rests on just multiplies and the tattoo won’t show up very well. You’ll want to go the fabric paint or body paint route to get the best bold, bright tats.

– Can’t do white sections, because sharpie ink is transparent and doesn’t come in white. I leave them blank and they read OK, but the white areas will always be pink, tan, brown, etc. unless you dab in a little fabric paint, which will not be covered in this tutorial.

– Sharpie is supposed to be permanent marker, but on skin…it’s not. The ink will most likely wear off onto adjacent clothes. Not that big of a deal for me, as I tend to wear my tats with white shirts that can be bleached, but other shirts may not survive as well.

OK, let’s go! Here are your supplies:

You’ll need a pair of nylons, scissors, tape, a set of sharpies, your designs printed out on 8.5 x 11 paper, some bracelets, and a can of Pringles. You can use any design you want, of course, but Here is the link to these fine Newt Kaiju tattoo designs.

If your nylons have an undies part, cut the legs off and wear the undies on your head for the rest of the tutorial, if desired. Put the legs on your arm like so, and cut the toes off so you can slip your hand through. You can cut some of the top of the sleeve off as well, but don’t cut too much because you can’t put it back on if your sleeves are too short.

Here are my creepy sleeves. Now for the pringles.

Tape your design template to the Pringles can. It doesn’t reach all the way around but eh. The Pringles can gives you a nice stable surface to draw on that is roughly the shape and size of an arm. It’s a little short, so just roll up the rest of the nylon above the workspace and adjust both template and nylon down when you get to working on that part of the sleeve.

Color with the markers! I recommend doing the colored areas first and then doing the black outlines on top of it, to avoid the black ink contaminating the ink pads of the lighter markers. Remember how that always happens to the yellow ones? Eww. Nylons are thin and slide around a bit, so it’s best to use short strokes and dotting to get the ink on.

Take the template off the Pringles tube, flip the paper to the blank side and put it back on again. The paper collects the extra ink, so it’s hard to see any missed spots. Now you can see any bits you may have missed. Fill them in for completion. Also, the paper doesn’t manage to wrap all the way around the Pringles can, so now is the time to free-hand a bit of the design where the template doesn’t reach. For Newt tattoos, that’s the back of the arm.

When you’re all done coloring, put them on!

There’s a rough end to the tattoo right at the wrist, of course. Disguise where the sleeve ends and your skin begins with some pretty bracelets:

There we are, much better!

Now…you’re done! Have some Pringles!

SLAMS THE REBLOG BUTTON

from a tattooist perspective: use the navy sharpie not the black or blue for your lines, they will look like healed black ink.

This is amazing. Particularly “if your nylons have an undies part, cut the legs off and wear the undies on your head for the rest of the tutorial, if desired.

it would keep your hair out of the way as well as lending a pleasant air of derangement to the proceedings

Galactic Standard Time Measurement

  • 60 Seconds = 1 minute
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 24 hours = 1 day

Galactic Standard Calendar

  • 5 days = 1 week
  • 7 weeks = 1 month
  • 35 days = 1 month
  • 368 days = 1 year
  • 10 months + 3 Fete (Festival) weeks + 3 holidays = 1 year

Fete/Festival Weeks

  • New Year Fete Week = first five days of the new year (takes place before the first month)
  • Festival of Life =  five days between the sixth and seventh months. It was marked by parties, get-togethers, and gift-giving.
  • Festival of Stars =five days between the ninth and tenth months of the year that celebrates interstellar space travel. It was marked by vacations to other worlds most often.

Days of the Week

  • Primeday (first day of the week)
  • Centaxday (second day)
  • Taungsday (third day)
  • Zhellday (fourth day)
  • Benduday (fifth/last day of the week)

The Galactic Standard Calendar is based on the

luno-solar calendar of Coruscant (from before the official founding of the Empire). It is the ‘standard’ in both the Republic and the Empire for basic measurements. However, there are many, many variations for various species, planets, etc. This is just the ‘standard’ used; similar to measurements of weight, etc.

Basically, this is not the ‘only calendar’ but the one used most often by governments, the military, etc. to be the ‘standard’. I thought it might be useful for people writing or roleplaying in the Star Wars galaxies to have a rough idea.

NOTE: There is mention in some sources of a 12 month/368 day calendar, but it doesn’t mention length of weeks, months, etc. other than ‘30-31 days’ so basically seems to be a ‘real life calendar’. I’m not 100% sure which is considered ‘canon’ so I choose to list the one that was a bit more ‘different’ for fun.

How important do you have to be to have been “assassinated” instead of “murdered”?

That is…a good question

If the motivation is political, then it’s assassination. Otherwise it’s murder. You cannot be assassinated by accident.

If a jilted ex murders the Prince of Placeland, it’s just a murder.

If a jilted ex is also a member of a rival political faction, it may be assassination.

If a jilted ex is driving home in tears and accidentally runs over the Prince of Placeland in the middle of the night in a neighborhood where the streetlights are out because of the prince’s questionable infrastructure policy, it’s manslaughter.

Thanks murder side of tumblr

I had always thought that if you paid someone to do it, it was assassination, no matter the person’s importance.

It is.

Homicide = killing someone, can even be an accident or not premeditated.

Murder = planned homicide.

Assassination = paid homicide

I don’t have the legalese to go with it though, so if someone does, feel free to share.

Except a politically motivated volunteer homicide is also assassination. There’s basically two kinds. But confusingly they often overlap.

Like when corporations hire people to murder rainforest conservation activists it’s both kinds of assassination, but unless you can prove it it’s going to get filed as a random murder.
