I’ve realized that one of the things I love so much about The Martian is that the whole story is basically one of my favorite fiction tropes: the fix-it fic.
Can’t you just imagine?
The dramatic opening about the crewmember who dies on Mars, then the story about overcoming that death a returning to Mars on another mission? Or “learning to live again” on Earth? Or anything else where Mark’s death is the drama that has to be overcome?
Except The Martian just throws out the rest of the story and says, “let’s fix the horrible death at the beginning so everybody lives.”
It’s fix-it fic.
